Appears in the following schemes

FLC regulation during a cold period

Protein function

Encodes a MADS-box transcription factor.

Phenotype

Overexpressor:
MAF5 overexpressor is late flowering under 12h-light - 12-h dark SD conditions in the Ler background but not in the Col-0 background. [Ratcliffe et al., 2003]

Single mutant:
maf5 single mutant is slightly early flowering under SD conditions only. ( maf5 single mutant shows increased sensitivity to a vernalizing treatment of 20 days.) [Kim et al., 2013][Kang et al., 2015]

Function:
Transcription factor involved in the negative regulation of flowering time in short days, probably through the photoperiodic and vernalization pathways. Prevents premature flowering, particularly in the cv. Landsberg erecta background. In non-inductive photoperiods (e.g. short days), required for flowering through VIL2-mediated maintenance of the epigenetically repressed state of MAF5 via H3K9me2 and plant homeodomain / polycomb repressive complex 2 (PHD-PRC2)-dependent H3K27me3.
